Due to the embodied carbon in any building one of the most sustainable forms of development is the re-use of redundant buildings rather than demolition and new build on a site. Our team have a proven track record of delivering conversions and refurbishments of existing buildings to bring them back to life and into use without the need for carbon intensive new builds. We have completed a number of barn conversions over the years to residential use as well as office and industrial uses. We have also delivered the conversion of redundant factory buildings to offices and apartments. Even a simple house extension will have an improved carbon lifecycle when compared to moving to a new build dwelling as it will extend the life and usefulness of an existing dwelling.
Sometimes, a new build is the only answer on a site and in those cases Hayward Architects will work with all stakeholders to help to deliver a sustainable development. Whether it be considering the Flood Risks associated with Climate Change or ensuring a building is adequately insulated while also ensuring it does not overheat as global temperatures continue to rise. We can advise on the use of alternative materials, energy and heating sources that will reduce the carbon use in the total life cycle of a new building from inception through construction to the use and eventual demolition of a building.
Our Directors have adopted a “do as we do” attitude and both drive electric cars to reduce the carbon footprint of their travel both within their work and personal lives. We have installed an Electric charging point at our office which is free for all staff to use.

As every project is unique in it’s size and type of work, and the degree of involvement from Hayward Architects will vary, the pricing structure for our Architectural Services is tailored to suit each project. Every stage is priced separately, so you can decide which stages to proceed with.
